Síndrome Metabólico y Factores de Riesgo Relacionados en Jóvenes Ecuatorianos

Resumen

El síndrome metabólico se refiere a una combinación de hipertensión, obesidad abdominal, resistencia a la insulina e hiperlipidemia. Está asociado a otras condiciones como grados variables de alteraciones del metabolismo hidrocarbonado, ya sea diabetes mellitus o intolerancia a la glucosa, obesidad y resistencia insulínica.  En la actualidad está demostrado que se trata de una situación de salud que promueve la aterosclerosis y la diabetes mellitus tipo 2. El síndrome metabólico era considerado hasta hace algunos años como una condición de la edad adulta, sin embargo, recientemente se ha demostrado una prevalencia creciente en niños, adolescentes y adultos jóvenes vinculada al aumento considerable de la obesidad y a un aumento de complicaciones como la morbimortalidad cardiovascular. Hacemos una revisión bibliográfica sobre síndrome metabólico y sus principales componentes en adultos jóvenes, grupo etario que por sus condiciones de vida está siendo más vulnerable para contraerlo, los mismos que de no corregirse van a dar como resultado que las complicaciones de este síndrome, como enfermedad cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, diabetes mellitus tipo 2, se presenten cada vez a edades más tempranas. Incluimos los resultados de una investigación realizada en jóvenes estudiantes de los primeros semestres de la Facultad de Ciencias Médicas de la Universidad Central del Ecuador. En poblaciones jóvenes el síndrome metabólico es mucho menos prevalente, por lo que se incluyó la medición de marcadores como el índice de masa corporal y marcadores de inflamación: citoquinas pro inflamatorias, proteína C reactiva ultrasensible, para tener un diagnóstico más cercano a su realidad.
