Se empleó el test de Pfeiffer, que permite establecer la calidad del sueño y los factores que alteran el patrón funcional normal. En el estudio estuvieron incluidos 45 Adultos Mayores que asisten al Centro. Resultados: El 48,89% de las mujeres presentó trastornos en el patrón normal de sueño y descanso. Entre los principales factores se establecieron el estrés en el 78% y el ruido representó el 71%, que constituyen los factores más relevantes que perjudican el sueño y descanso. El 56% de la población manifestó que no duerme las horas adecuadas ya que lo hacen de 1-4 horas. Conclusión: los Adultos Mayores del Centro APETEHID presentan alteraciones en la calidad del sueño, considerando que el descanso no es placentero ni reparador. Estas alteraciones están asociadas a diversos factores en sus hogares, que les impiden tener un buen descanso como el estrés, fatiga y alteraciones del humor.<strong>Palabras clave:</strong> sueño; descanso; adultos mayores.<strong>Abstract</strong>Background: The elderly have decompensation in their organism due to the degenerative process caused by their age, so they are more prone to present pathologies and chronic conditions.Objective: To determine the factors that influence upon the quality of sleep and rest of elderly people who attend the Association of Hypertensive and Diabetic Persons of the Third Age (APETEHID).Method: A quantitative study was carried out, with a descriptive scope, where the factors that affect the quality of sleep and rest in the elderly of the city of Esmeraldas were detailed. The Pfeiffer test was used, which allows to establish the quality of sleep and the factors that alter the normal functional pattern. The study included 45 elderly people who attend the Center.Results: 48.89% of the women presented disorders in the normal pattern of sleep and rest. Among the main factors, stress was established in 78% and noise represented 71%, which are the most relevant factors that impair sleep and rest. 56% of the population said that they do not sleep the right number of hours since they do it for 1-4 hours.Conclusion: The elderly of the APETEHID Center present alterations in the quality of sleep, considering that rest is not pleasant or restful.
