Abstract

Background: Infections related to sanitary assistance during neurosurgical practice are complications of high mortality and socioeconomic cost. Knowing the epidemiology contributes to improve strategies to reduce its appearance.

Objective: to characterize the epidemiology of infections associated with healthcare in the Neurosurgery service at Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital during the period 2015-2017.

Method: A retrospective and descriptive study was carried out, using the database of patients operated on, whom suffered infections related to sanitary assistance and revealed clinical expression with positive culture, during 2015 to 2017. The infections were classified as proper of neurosurgical procedure and related to neurosurgical procedure. The information related to neurosurgical infections was obtained from the Infections Committee and the Epidemiology Department of the hospital.

Results: During the time period considered, 141 cases of infections related to sanitary assistance were diagnosed. In patients who underwent an endonasal endoscopic approach, infections related to the neurosurgical procedure predominated (urinary and low respiratory tract infections); whereas in those who underwent craniotomies and ventricular peritoneal shunt  , the infections typical of the surgical procedure (surgical wound) prevailed, followed in a non-negligible way by those associated with the surgical procedure (urinary system and bloodstream). There was a reduction of the rates studied in 2017.

Conclusions: The complexity of the neurosurgical patient care process predisposes it to the appearance of infections associated with healthcare. Early detection, personalized analysis and compliance with the norms and action plans developed to this effect influence upon the decrease of infections in this group of patients.
