Abstract

A quantitative descriptive cross-sectional study of 69 patients from a population of 141 asthmatic patients over 60 years of age from the health area belonging to the "Piti Fajardo" polyclinic, Las Tunas municipality, Cuba, was carried out during the period from January 2017 to December 2017, with the aim of making a clinical and epidemiological characterization of asthma in the elderly. The probabilistic sample was obtained through the formula for simple random samples. A medical interview was conducted, and the personal medical history was studied. The informed consent of the patients was obtained before incorporating them into the study. Among the most significant results was the onset of early start; the female sex was more affected; prevalence rates greater than 5 and an incidence rate of 0,31, lower than the national mean; mild asthma prevails; the most frequent concomitant diseases are hypertension, osteoarthritis, heart disease and gastroesophageal reflux; the general progress of our sample was satisfactory as a result of the treatment. It is concluded that asthma is characterized by its early onset, with a greater involvement of the female sex. Both prevalence and incidence are within the standard range of the Cuban average; There are chronic diseases that are coexisting with asthma in the elderly.
