Abstract

Metabolic syndrome refers to a combination of hypertension, abdominal obesity, insulin resistance and hyperlipidemia. It is associated with other conditions such as varying degrees of abnormal carbohydrate metabolism, either diabetes mellitus or glucose intolerance, obesity and insulin resistance. Today it is proven that it is a health situation that promotes atherosclerosis and type 2 diabetes mellitus. The metabolic syndrome was considered until a few years ago as a condition of adulthood, however, recently it has been shown a growing prevalence in children, adolescents and young adults linked to the considerable increase in obesity and an increase in complications such as cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. We review the literature on metabolic syndrome and its major components in young adults, age group that their living conditions are becoming more vulnerable to collapse, the same as if not corrected will result in complications of this syndrome, as disease cardiovascular, cerebrovascular, diabetes mellitus type 2, are made increasingly younger ages. We include the results of an investigation carried out in young students of the first semesters of the Faculty of Medical Sciences of the Central University of Ecuador. In young populations the metabolic syndrome is much less prevalent, so the measurement of markers such as body mass index and inflammation markers were included: proinflammatory cytokines, ultrasensitive C reactive protein, to have a diagnosis closer to their reality.
