The Importance of Pragmatics in the Teaching –Learning of English as a Foreign Language
Keywords:

The present paper constitutes a reflection on the necessity and importance of incorporating pragmatics in the teaching-learning process of English as a foreign language. Many studies have demonstrated that, in general, students of a second language are not developing appropriately the pragmatic ability of that language. This is the reason why, even though students may have a thorough knowledge of grammar, syntax, vocabulary, and phonetics, they still have problems trying to understand the language in certain contexts and when talking to native speakers of this language. In Ecuador, research in the field of English pragmatics is still very scarce. The awareness of the importance of this element of Linguistics needs to be raised in teachers and researchers.
