Abstract

At the San José Benito Cottolengo Educational institution in Esmeraldas, the lack of interest in reading has become an educational problem that threatens the performance of schoolchildren. With the objective of identifying the level of reading comprehension that the students in the third year of Basic General Education of said Educational Unit have, a quantitative, cross-sectional and descriptive study was carried out. Two Cloze Test techniques were applied for data collection to the 41 third-year students. In the results of the Cloze 1 Test, only 9.75% obtained an independent reading level, while 39.02% showed a level of frustration, with men having lower results than women (44.4% and 5.5%, versus 34.8% and 13%, respectively). In the Cloze 2 Test, the frustration level dropped to 21.9% and at the independent level the figure rose to 29.3%. It is concluded that there are shortcomings and weaknesses in reading comprehension at the desired level, so it is imperative to execute a didactic proposal resulting from the present investigation.
